A Modelling Approach for Predicting Residual Stresses and Distortions in Polymer Composites

چکیده

High dimensional variability is inherent in the manufacture of fibre-reinforced composite components. In the aerospace industry, this stems largely from the elevated temperatures needed to process the composite materials, which give rise to residual, or frozen-in, stresses; these are exacerbated by chemical shrinkage of the resin during cure. These stresses can subsequently cause distortion and, in some instances, premature cracking of the moulding, which can only be relieved by expensive reworking and can, in severe cases, result in the structure being scrapped. The work has been aimed to develop reliable and accurate modelling tools to predict distortions in moulded components, ultimately allowing mould tools to be manufactured and curing regimes to be applied, which take these distortions into account. This will therefore result in lower cost and waste generation through ‘right-first-time’ manufacture.

A Novel Method to Decrease Micro-residual Stresses of Fibrous Composites by Adding Carbon Nanotube

In this research, a novel method to decrease micro-residual stresses of fibrous composites by adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is proposed in detail. The negative coefficient of thermal expansion and the high young’s modulus of CNTs can be utilized to counterbalance the process induced residual stresses in composites. To this end, first, the effects of adding CNTs to the matrix of fibrous composi...

A Review on the Mechanical Modeling of Composite Manufacturing Processes

The increased usage of fiber reinforced polymer composites in load bearing applications requires a detailed understanding of the process induced residual stresses and their effect on the shape distortions. This is utmost necessary in order to have more reliable composite manufacturing since the residual stresses alter the internal stress level of the composite part during the service life and t...

Application of Pulse Method to Incremental Slitting Measurement of Residual Stresses in Laminated Composites

In this research, the incremental slitting method was employed to determine throughthickness residual stress profile of a carbon/epoxy laminate. The method involves measuring strains at the back surface of the stressed specimen, while a narrow slit is cut by a CNC milling machine progressively from the top surface of the specimen. "Pulse Method" was selected as the computational approach for th...

Investigation of Important Parameters in Residual Stress Determination in Isotropic Plates and Laminated Composites by Slitting Method

In the slitting method, a small width slit is created incrementally through the thickness of the stressed specimen and the released strains in each increment are recorded by a strain gauge. Compliance coefficients relate the measured strains to the residual stresses. This paper investigates the important parameters influencing the calculation of compliance coefficients for isotropic plates and ...

Distribution of Residual Stresses in Polymer Reinforced Carbon Nanotubes and Laminated Carbon Fibers

In this study, the distribution of residual stress in fiber-reinforced nanocomposites is investigated. Fiber-reinforced nanocomposite is composed of three substances: carbon fiber, carbon nanotube (CNT), and polymer matrix. Unit cells in hexagonal packing array with different arrays as unit cell, 3*3 and 5*5 arrays have been selected as suitable for finite element analysis of residual stresses....
